Australian BioRefining is also investigating processes for synthesising mannitol
in conjunction with gluconic acid, and for manufacturing 2-keto gluconic acid
for use in producing erythorbic acid (isoascorbic acid).
Mannitol is used as a food additive, in pharmaceutical preparation, in diabetic foods as a sweetener, and in some areas of industry as a plastics additive, as a component in common batteries, and as a feedstock for chemical synthesis.
Initial laboratory testing has shown excellent selectivity in mannitol synthesis, and further work will be undertaken to develop this into a commercially viable process.
2-keto gluconic acid is a strategically ideal product stream for development,
as it offers an excellent complement to gluconic acid production, and existing
research indicates that our proposed process route is feasible. Additionally
our own developments in gluconic acid processing are encouraging for 2 keto
gluconic acid synthesis.
Erythorbic acid produced from 2 keto gluconic acid is used as a food additive and antioxidant. It has also been used for preparation of high purity silver inks for electronics use.
